Performance at the Islington Mill - 24th April 2012

What happened tonight. I saw caught glimpse of the evolution of a relationship between two fictional characters.

These woman exist in a very tedious and tense universe. I have seen several iterations of the work now. In the Toast universe, the women are able to reset so I, as a viewer—each time I perceive a new performance—always catch them from the beginning of their routine. I wonder if they reset by choice or if even this reset is a manifestation of a fundamental element of this universe. Is it that the fabric of their reality be permeated with such a degree of tedium and repetition that even the decision to allow an audience to view them from the same starting point is actually hellish. Its not a decision at all, but a rote activity to which they have to submit slavishly. Even that.

I was very surprised when something unexpected happened in tonight’s iteration.

Each performance up until now has only involved the threat of violence. The audience perceives within this scene, a development in the relationship between these two women. In this scene, the tension builds and is made visible by the expressions and actions—overtly by one character and more subtly in the other. Up until now that’s all I thought was happening—that was the scope of the work. Tonight there was a break in the routine, in that the threat of violence turned to a possible full on act of violence: one woman chases the other out of the room with a knife, effectively ending the performance and closing off access to their universe. It had taken these characters this many performances to manifest just that one single change. Things happen so slowly for them. There is much less progress there than there is here, as if it were a commodity.

As far as the women playing those roles—and not the characters—it made me question how much of their performance was improvisation and how much is written through (and how much is in-between). Was this always an option? Do they have freedom as actors to keep the scene as tranquil as they see fit in the moment, or to escalate it in extreme ways. If this kind of openness is allowed—and I hope it is—then watching how the actors react to one another not knowing what the other will actually do next, becomes much more interesting as a viewer. This iteration gave me that.

A big thankyou to all the guests that came along and supported the exhibition, last Friday. We all agreed it was a fantastic night, helped especially with the appreciation the guests gave for the exhibition and the two performances of the evening, including ourselves Kate & Deb and Angela Guyton. It was a pleasure to be invited along and perform at the Exhibition with the MA students from Salford University. Looking forward to the group critique coming shortly….

A group of performance artists and artists from Salford come together for a celebration of COLOUR. Their last two events have been devoted to black and yellow and this one is all about RED. Performance and experimentation combine at this unusual night, with artists burning toast, making yellow screen-prints, hosting yellow raffles and more. Red will be an evening of red performance, red multi media, red experimental art and revolution.
